From surviving service records, the following outline of Charles Frederick Stelzle’s life and military service can be reconstructed.

Charles Frederick Stelzle was born on 16 March 1908 in Hull, Yorkshire. Before enlistment he worked as a clerk. He married Edna Crawley in Hull on 3 August 1940, and together they had one child.

He was described as being 5 feet 7½ inches tall, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

He enlisted in the British Army on 26 February 1942 and initially joined the General Service Corps. On 14 May 1942 he was transferred to the Royal Corps of Signals. On 24 June 1942 he joined the King’s Regiment (Liverpool), and later, on 31 August 1944, he was transferred to the Welch Regiment.

Charles Frederick Stelzle embarked for service in North West Europe on 13 July 1944.

He was killed in action on 22 September 1944.
