From surviving service records, the following outline of George Gibson’s life and military service can be reconstructed.
George Gibson was born on 4 October 1909 in Longsight, Manchester, Lancashire. Before enlistment he worked as a labourer. He married Annie Whittaker in Manchester on 24 June 1935, and together they had two children. His physical description records him as being 5 feet 5¾ inches tall, with brown eyes and brown hair.
He enlisted in the British Army on 19 January 1934 and joined the King’s Regiment (Liverpool).
George Gibson embarked for service in North West Europe on 5 June 1944.
He was killed in action on 21 September 1944. He was later mentioned in despatches, an official recognition of distinguished or gallant service, recorded on 20 March 1945.
