Arthur Brooks was born on 22 March 1916 in Bolton, Lancashire. In civilian life he worked as a heavy labourer. He was described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, with blue eyes and brown hair.
On 19 April 1940 he enlisted in the British Army, joining the 3rd (Horsed) Cavalry Training Regiment. Later that year, on 26 August 1940, he married Florence Gertrude Bates. The couple remained living in Bolton and had at least one child together.
Arthur served overseas in Africa from 10 November 1942 until 9 February 1944, after which he returned to England. On 6 June 1944, D-Day, he was shipped to North-West Europe as part of the Allied campaign.
