From the service records of Charles Ronald Gray, the following account can be reconstructed.
Charles Ronald Gray was born on 19 September 1923 in Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was described as being 5 feet 5¾ inches tall, with brown eyes and brown hair. He was unmarried.
He enlisted in the British Army on 20 February 1942, joining The Queen’s Royal Regiment. On 29 August 1944, he was deployed to North-West Europe as part of the Allied campaign following the Normandy landings. On 6 October 1944, he was transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders.
Charles Ronald Gray died of wounds on 18 October 1944.
