From the service records of William Harry Aley, the following account can be reconstructed.
William Harry Aley was born on 20 June 1920 in Moncton, Essex. In civilian life he worked as a farm labourer. He enlisted in the British Army on 17 September 1938 and initially served with the Essex Regiment. Before he joined he was a builders laberour by trade.
He was deployed with the British Expeditionary Force in France from 16 September 1939 until 28 June 1940. On 13 April 1942 he was transferred to the South Lancashire Regiment, and on 4 April 1944 he was posted to the Cameronians.
William Harry Aley married Edith Eunice Mary Turp on 30 March 1942 in Thurrock, Essex. The couple had one child.
He embarked for service in North West Europe on 1 July 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 5¾ inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.
William Harry Aley died of wounds on 1 October 1944.
