From the service records of John Morgan, the following details can be established.
John Morgan was born on 6 May 1919 in the parish of Skannes, near Liverpool. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted for military service in Liverpool and was posted to The King’s Regiment. According to his records, he was 5 feet 7½ inches tall, with blue-grey eyes and brown hair.
He served with The King’s Regiment in Gibraltar from 20 May 1939 until 12 May 1942, a period during which the strategically important fortress played a key role in the defence of the Mediterranean. On 4 May 1943, John married Janet, and the couple lived together in Bootle.
On 24 July 1944, he was transferred to the East Lancashire Regiment, and shortly afterwards, on 18 August 1944, he was posted to the Monmouthshire Regiment. While serving with this unit, John Morgan was killed in action on 25 September 1944 near Voorheide, close to Arendonk, in Belgium. He was twenty-five years old.
