From the service records of Clarence Edward Newberry, the following account can be reconstructed.
Clarence Edward Newberry was born on 7 April 1911 in Chard, Somerset. In civilian life he worked as a hairdresser. He was described as being 5 feet 4½ inches tall, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.
He enlisted in the British Army on 29 July 1940 and joined the 48th Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery. On 16 March 1944, he was transferred to the Devonshire Regiment.
Clarence was deployed to North-West Europe on 12 August 1944. He was killed in action on 17 September 1944.
