From the service records of William Raeside, the following account can be reconstructed.
William Raeside was born on 19 April 1914 in Kippen, Stirlingshire. He was described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, with brown eyes and brown hair, and had a tattoo on his left forearm.
He first served in the British Army between 1932 and 1938, and later re-enlisted on 16 May 1940, joining the Sutherland Highlanders. On 15 November 1941, William married Janet Wier in Grahamston, Falkirk, Stirlingshire. The couple had no children.
William saw extensive overseas service during the war. He served in the Middle East from 13 March 1943 until 28 August 1943, followed by service with the British North Africa Force from 29 August 1943 until 25 November 1943. On 9 June 1944, he was sent to North-West Europe.
William Raeside died of wounds on 14 October 1944.
