From the service records of Robert Read, the following account can be reconstructed.
Robert Read was born on 8 September 1916 in St Philip’s, Nelson, Lancashire. In civilian life he worked as an electrician’s mate. He enlisted in the British Army on 15 March 1940 and joined the Lancashire Fusiliers. On 26 August 1944 he was transferred to the Highland Light Infantry.
Robert Read was not married.
He embarked for service in North West Europe on 1 July 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 2¼ inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Robert Read died of wounds on 22 September 1944.
