From the service records of Alexander Stokes, the following account can be reconstructed.

Alexander Stokes was born on 22 August 1925 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. In civilian life he worked as a light lorry driver.

He enlisted in the British Army on 6 January 1944 and joined the General Service Corps. On 8 February 1944 he was transferred to the Gordon Highlanders.

Alexander Stokes embarked for service in North West Europe on 31 July 1944.

According to his service records, he was 5 feet 5⅝ inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Alexander Stokes was killed in action on 1 October 1944.
