From the service records of George William Ashmole, the following account can be reconstructed.
George William Ashmole was born on 14 March 1918 in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Before his military service he worked as a clerk. He married in Maidstone on 1 August 1940, and together they had at least one son.
He enlisted in the British Army on 15 January 1940 and initially served with the Royal West Kent Regiment. On 1 February 1942 he transferred to the Royal Artillery, serving as a Warrant Officer (Bombardier).
On 26 July 1943 he transferred to the Royal Welch Fusiliers, where he served as a War Sergeant. His leadership qualities were formally recognised when he was commissioned as an officer on 21 January 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, with blue eyes and brown hair.
George William Ashmole was killed in action on 25 September 1944.
