From the service records of Fred Barnes, the following account can be reconstructed.
Fred Barnes was born on 24 November 1916 in Droylsden, Lancashire. In civilian life he worked as an upholsterer. He enlisted in the British Army on 16 April 1940 and joined the Welch Regiment.
He married Ivey Chapman on 23 December 1939 in Chesterfield. The couple had one child.
Fred Barnes embarked for service in North West Europe on 20 June 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, with dark brown hair and green eyes.
Fred Barnes died of wounds on 26 September 1944.
