From the service records of John William Dalby, the following account can be reconstructed.

John William Dalby was born on 26 November 1918 in Tadcaster, near York, Yorkshire. His occupation prior to enlistment is recorded as “industry letters.” He enlisted in the British Army on 16 October 1939 and joined the Highland Light Infantry.

His early overseas service included deployment with the British Expeditionary Force from 14 February 1940 until 31 May 1940.

He married Gladys Lightfort on 18 May 1944 in Leeds. The couple had no children.

John William Dalby embarked for service in North West Europe on 20 June 1944.

According to his service records, he was 5 feet 8¼ inches tall, with dark brown hair and brown eyes.

John William Dalby was wounded in action on 22 September 1944, suffering multiple penetrating wounds to the right loin and both arms. He died of his wounds on 30 September 1944.
