Son of Patrick and Mary Dee, of Mount Collins, Co. Limerick, Irish Republic.

Michael Dee was born November 12, 1912 and served with the 3rd battalion Irish Guards during the war. On the 17th of September 1944 his unit was part of an operation called “Market Garden”. The Irish Guards broke out of there bridgehead at Lommel Belgium in their race to reach Arnhem. In the first minutes of the operation 9 tanks of the Irish Guards were ambushed on the road toward Valkenswaard. Heavy fighting broke out and Michael Dee was killed while he was trying to give an wounded German soldier some water.
