Additional information:
Michael Delaney served with the 3rd battalion Irish Guards. On the 17th of September 1944 his unit was part of an operation called “Market Garden”. The Irish Guards broke out of there bridgehead at Lommel Belgium in their race to reach Arnhem. In the first minutes of the operation 9 tanks of the Irish Guards were ambushed on the road toward Valkenswaard. Heavy fighting broke out and Michael was killed.
I can give you a little information about my Uncle. “Mick” as he was known by the family, was born to Irish parents who had emigrated to live in Liverpool England. One of 6 siblings, Mick was single at the time of his death, and was killed 4 days before his 21st Birthday. I know he was a much loved Son and Brother, especially by my Dad who was 13 at the time, and adored and admired his big Brother. My Dad later joined the Irish Guards continuing a proud family tradition.
Over the years several members of the family have visited Valkenswaard to pay their respects at the gravesite.
