From the service records of William Hammond, the following account can be reconstructed.

William Hammond was born on 24 April 1925 in All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. In civilian life he worked as an asphaltor. He was not married.

He enlisted in the British Army on 15 July 1943 and joined the Primary Training Wing. On 26 July 1943 he was transferred to the Border Regiment, and later, on 1 August 1944, to the East Lancashire Regiment.

William Hammond embarked for service in North West Europe on 31 May 1944.

According to his service records, he was 5 feet 5⅝ inches tall, with dark hair and brown eyes.

William Hammond was killed in action on 22 September 1944.
