Son of Arthur William and Clara Hargreaves, of Leeds, Yorkshire; husband of Irene May Hargreaves, of Leeds.
Born on 12-08-1922. He died on 17-09-1944 during the opening battles of Market Garden, on the way to Valkenswaard.
From the service records of Arthur Hargreaves, the following account can be reconstructed.
Arthur Hargreaves was born on 12 August 1922 in Leeds, Yorkshire. In civilian life he worked as a miller. He was 5 feet 3½ inches tall, with grey eyes and brown hair.
He enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 14 August 1940. Arthur was deployed to North-West Europe on 11 June 1944, taking part in the fighting following the Normandy landings. On 26 August 1944, he was transferred to the Devonshire Regiment.
Arthur Hargreaves was killed in action on 17 September 1944. He had married Irene May Murphy on 25 September 1943, and together they had one child.
