From the service records of Raymond Howarth, the following account can be reconstructed.

Raymond Howarth was born on 22 April 1924 in St. Saviours, Birk, Lancashire. In civilian life he worked as an edge trimmer, a skilled trade in manufacturing or textiles. He was 5 feet 7⅝ inches tall, with blue eyes and sandy hair. Raymond was unmarried.

He enlisted in the Recce Corps on 5 November 1942. On 1 January 1944, he transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC). Raymond was deployed to North-West Europe on 17 July 1944, shortly after the Normandy landings.

He was killed in action on 25 September 1944, during the heavy fighting of the autumn campaign in North-West Europe.
