James Leary was born on 23 May 1915 in Tildesley, Lancashire. In civilian life he worked as a painter and decorator. He enlisted in the British Army on 11 May 1940 and joined the Lancashire Fusiliers. On 23 June 1940 he was transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers.
James Leary was not married.
He embarked for service in North West Europe on 19 June 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 2⅝ inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes.
James Leary was killed in action on 18 September 1944.
