Norman Mallon served with the 3rd battalion Irish Guards. On the 17th of September 1944 his unit was part of an operation called “Market Garden”. The Irish Guards broke out of there bridgehead at Lommel Belgium in their race to reach Arnhem. In the first minutes of the operation 9 tanks of the Irish Guards were ambushed on the road toward Valkenswaard. Heavy fighting broke out and Norman was killed trying to help a wounded soldier when a grenade hit their position.
Norman Mallon was adopted by Sarah Jane Mallon. He had a relation with Elisabeth Cardwell. Out of this relationship a son named Enoch was born. Norman was a proffesional soldier who joined the Irish Guards in 1925. He was a great example for the men around him.

Norman Mallon was born on 18 May 1914 in Shankill, Belfast, County Antrim. In civilian life he worked as a general labourer. He was not married.
He enlisted in the British Army on 30 March 1936 and joined the Irish Guards.
His overseas service included posting to Egypt from 14 November 1936 until 16 December 1938.
Norman Mallon embarked for service in North West Europe on 8 August 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, with light brown hair and grey eyes.
Norman Mallon was killed in action on 17 September 1944.
