From the service records of James Mowat, the following account can be reconstructed.

James Mowat was born on 24 October 1922 in Scone, Perthshire. In civilian life he worked as an aspiring joiner. His physical description records him as 5 feet 7½ inches tall, with blue eyes and fair hair. He was unmarried.

He enlisted in the British Army on 16 April 1942, initially joining the General Service Corps (GSC). After his initial training and assessment, he was transferred on 3 October 1942 to the Royal Scots Fusiliers, where he continued his military service.

James was later deployed to the North-West Europe theatre of operations. On 28 September 1944, during active service in this theatre, he was wounded and died of his wounds on the same day, 28 September 1944.

James Mowat was a young Scottish soldier whose service with the Royal Scots Fusiliers ended during the heavy fighting of the autumn of 1944, as Allied forces pushed forward in the liberation of occupied Europe.
