From the service records of James Renton, the following account can be reconstructed.
James Renton was born on 28 May 1920 in Duns, Berwickshire. In civilian life he worked as a baker. He enlisted in the British Army on 25 April 1939 and joined the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
He married Myrtle Jenkins on 1 May 1943 in Epping. The couple had one child.
James Renton embarked for service in North West Europe on 14 June 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 6½ inches tall, with auburn hair and blue eyes.
James Renton was reported missing on 14 September 1944. He was later confirmed killed in action on that date. His parents were formally informed of his death by letter on 3 July 1945.
