From the service records of Andrew Smith, the following account can be reconstructed.
Andrew Smith was born on 4 September 1912 in Langforgan, Perthshire. In civilian life he worked as a quarry labourer. He enlisted in the British Army on 26 September 1932 and joined The Black Watch.
He married Jane J. Coutts on 2 August 1932 in Dundee. The couple had two children.
During his military service, Andrew Smith served overseas in India from 26 September 1933 until 12 December 1936, followed by service in Sudan from 13 December 1936 until 17 March 1938. He later served in North Africa from 14 March 1943 until 26 November 1943.
Andrew Smith embarked for service in North West Europe on 3 July 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 5½ inches tall, with brown hair and grey eyes. He held the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS).
Andrew Smith died on 8 October 1944 of natural causes. His records state that he had lived for a week in dug-outs under rainy and damp conditions prior to his fatal illness.
