John Richard Smith was wounded on the road from Valkenswaard to Leende, on the 18th of September 1944.
From the service records of John Richard Smith, the following account can be reconstructed.
John Richard Smith was born on 24 February 1917 in Stillington, near York, Yorkshire. In civilian life he worked as a journeyman butcher. He enlisted in the British Army on 15 February 1940 and initially joined the 2nd Cavalry Training Regiment. On 21 November 1940 he was posted to the Household Cavalry.
He married Catherine Ann Smith on 26 February 1939 in Grangetown. The couple had no children.
John Richard Smith embarked for service in North West Europe on 13 July 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 9½ inches tall, with brown hair and grey eyes.
John Richard Smith died of wounds on 19 September 1944.
