From the service records of Robert Sutherland, the following account can be reconstructed.
Robert Sutherland was born on 4 September 1918 in Markinch, Thornton, Fifeshire. He enlisted in the British Army on 17 July 1939 and initially joined the Royal Artillery. On 4 October 1939 he was transferred to the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
He married Hannah Stafford in September 1941 in Ballynahinch, County Down. The couple had one child.
Robert Sutherland embarked for service in North West Europe on 24 June 1944.
According to his service records, he was 5 feet 2¾ inches tall, with dark brown hair and hazel eyes.
Robert Sutherland was killed in action on 25 September 1944.
