From the service records, the following outline of Joseph William Waterhouse’s life and military service can be reconstructed.
Joseph William Waterhouse was born on 19 May 1925 in St Cuthbert, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Before enlistment he worked as a steel mill labourer. He was not married. His physical description records him as being 5 feet 9⅛ inches tall, with hazel eyes and dark brown hair.
He enlisted in the British Army on 10 February 1943 and initially joined the General Service Corps. On 29 April 1943 he was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment. On 17 August 1943 he transferred to the Durham Light Infantry, and later, on 30 August 1944, to the Leicestershire Regiment.
Joseph William Waterhouse embarked for service in North West Europe on 11 June 1944.
He was killed in action on 8 November 1944.
