Charles Arthur Whitby was born on 28 October 1918 in Southwark, London. In civilian life he worked as a bricklayer. He married Evelyn Mayfowy Davies on 17 October 1939 in London, and together they had two children. His physical description records him as 5 feet 7⅛ inches tall, with blue eyes and fair hair.

He enlisted in the Welch Regiment on 20 October 1939, shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War. Charles was deployed to North-West Europe on 25 June 1944, taking part in the Allied advance following the Normandy landings.

Charles Arthur Whitby was killed in action on 22 September 1944, during the fierce fighting of the autumn campaign in North-West Europe.
