From the service records of James Wylie, the following account can be reconstructed.
James Wylie was born on 2 July 1918 in Govan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. In civilian life he was an apprentice joiner. He was described as being 5 feet 5¼ inches tall, with blue-green eyes and sandy hair.
He enlisted in the British Army on 16 July 1939, joining the Royal Artillery. On 4 October 1939, he was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
James was deployed to North-West Europe on 25 June 1944 as part of the Allied campaign following the Normandy landings. On 25 September 1944, he was reported missing and known to have been wounded. He later died of his wounds on that same date.
